Just upgraded to Vista

Posted in Business, Microsoft, Tech, Windows Vista by Jared Kim on February 3rd, 2007

I just upgraded from XP Pro to Vista Home Premium. Aside from a few software incompatablities, I’m really enjoying my experience with Vista so far (been using it for ~2 days).

A few things I like:

  • New Aero interface: transparency is sexy
  • New Control Panel: easily shows me common things I need to fiddle with
  • Built-in Search: Very snappy and lets me find what I’m looking for in a few seconds
  • Flip 3D: Basically a flashy 3D version of Alt-Tab. I don’t know how practical it is, but it’s defintely nice eye candy

A few issues I’ve had since upgrading:

  • TortoiseSVN’s latest stable build pops up an error about Explorer. Just download a Nightly Build instead and you’re fine.
  • I really didn’t like Vista’s new User Access Control security feature. I can understand how it would help a mainstream userĀ  from destroying his/her computer, but for me it was more a nuisance than a useful feature.
  • When running Trillian Pro, Vista reverts your Aero Glass interface Aero Basic. Read this thread for a quick fix.

That’s pretty much it. My advice for people who haven’t upgraded yet: Unless you REALLY want to play with the new flashy features, just stick with XP. There aren’t enough essential features to warrant an immedate upgrade. Just get it pre-installed on your next new PC purchase.
