I bought an iPhone
So I walked over to the SF Apple Store today and bought an iPhone. 5 minute wait, not much of a line. They get restocked daily (I went at 10:30am).
Pros
- Beautiful display: best ive seen on a phone
- Awesome touchscreen, virtual keyboard is great
- Wi-Fi support! Fast access when you have access
- Safari browser == real web browser. Being able to browse websites and viewing them the way they are supposed to be viewed is great.
- Google Maps is already great online. Put it on the iPhone and add a great touchscreen, then you got an awesome product. Multi-touch zoom in/out is sweet using two fingers.
- Music: never need an ipod again.
Cons
- Cingular EDGE network is slow. If you’re not connected to WiFi, say goodbye to browsing the web for the most part.
- Mail application sucks. Lacks basic mail functionality like mark all as read. Hell, you can’t even select more than one email and do batch operations.
- No MMS. This usually wouldn’t be an issue for me, but I just found out I can only do mobile Facebook photo uploads using MMS.
- Can’t use custom ringtones. You are restricted to the 20 or so that it comes with. The interwebs says this is in preparation for ringtones tab in iTunes.
- No way for 3rd party developers to make apps for it. I really wanted to use the WiFi support and install Skype or something for cheap international calls, but no can do.
This is all I can think of for now (been using it for 12 hours). Overall, it’s an amazing revolutionary phone. If you have the spare cash, buy one. It will only get better with software updates.
