I bought an iPhone

Posted in Apple, iPhone by Jared Kim on July 4th, 2007

So I walked over to the SF Apple Store today and bought an iPhone. 5 minute wait, not much of a line. They get restocked daily (I went at 10:30am).

Pros

  • Beautiful display: best ive seen on a phone
  • Awesome touchscreen, virtual keyboard is great
  • Wi-Fi support! Fast access when you have access
  • Safari browser == real web browser. Being able to browse websites and viewing them the way they are supposed to be viewed is great.
  • Google Maps is already great online. Put it on the iPhone and add a great touchscreen, then you got an awesome product. Multi-touch zoom in/out is sweet using two fingers.
  • Music: never need an ipod again.

Cons

  • Cingular EDGE network is slow. If you’re not connected to WiFi, say goodbye to browsing the web for the most part.
  • Mail application sucks. Lacks basic mail functionality like mark all as read. Hell, you can’t even select more than one email and do batch operations.
  • No MMS. This usually wouldn’t be an issue for me, but I just found out I can only do mobile Facebook photo uploads using MMS.
  • Can’t use custom ringtones. You are restricted to the 20 or so that it comes with. The interwebs says this is in preparation for ringtones tab in iTunes.
  • No way for 3rd party developers to make apps for it. I really wanted to use the WiFi support and install Skype or something for cheap international calls, but no can do.

This is all I can think of for now (been using it for 12 hours). Overall, it’s an amazing revolutionary phone. If you have the spare cash, buy one. It will only get better with software updates.

Safari for Windows?

Posted in Apple, Tech by Jared Kim on June 11th, 2007

I was testing the new Safari 3.0 for Windows today and tried to open up my super-secret-passworded-beta-site. It uses HTTP authentication for security. When Safari tried to open it, it just crashed right when the authentication screen popped up.

I guess that’s what you get with ‘Public Beta’…

I’m flying out to LA for Thanksgiving. I’m looking forward to the long lines, traffic and delays.

A few days after my Macbook’s battery died my iPod broke, so I won’t be having any mobile entertainment while I’m travelling.

I’ve been having some real bad Apple karma lately.

Macbook Battery Dead

Posted in Apple by Jared Kim on November 14th, 2006

Well, the battery on my Macbook died. I haven’t used my laptop for around 2 weeks. I charged it all night, but when I tried to boot it up today it didn’t respond. Plugging it back into AC power let me turn it on. The power status icon on the taskbar shows an empty battery with an ‘X’ in it. That basically means no battery has been detected. When I remove the AC power, the computer instantly shuts down. I guess I need to take it to an Apple store to get a replacement battery.

The Daily Happenings of 6/5/06

I wake up this morning to receive a Fedex package containing my Macbook (pics here). I play with it for an hour or two and go back to sleep.

I wake up again because my sister calls me. "You've been Valleywagged!" I check Valleywag and see the writeup about Stalkerati mentioning my name. Hurray! More press!

Maybe if I go back to sleep I'll be woken up again by an acquisition offer or something… ;p
