OmniGraffle seems like the best software to use to design DB schemas. Extremely easy to use. I’ve used Visio in the past but OmniGraffle just blows it away. If anyone reads this blog, what do you guys use to make schemas?

I used OmniGraffle yesterday to map out a database with a dozen or so tables. It worked OK, but having a more complete visual designer would be a better idea.
What would rule is a way to generate SQL from the diagrams.

Well, I’m having the same problem since quite a while. Nearly everything out there doesn’t seem to fit in — with one exception
I find most of the Java tools have some serious drawbacks (dbvisualizer, dbwrench, dbsolo, …) — while feature-bloated, the usability is incredible, in the negative sense of the word. There are some native Mac tools (mostly for querying and administration), but each of them appears to have a very limited feature set, or the ongoing development is way too slow [SQL4XJ, MacSQL, SQLGrinder, ...].
While XERD seems to be discontinued, there is a promising little application called “SQL Editor” (www.malcolmhardie.com), which in fact is a ERD diagramming/forward engineering/reverse engineering tool that has the look and feel of a native Cocoa app. It has some problems and limitations, too, but it comes very near what I expect from a tool like this.
)
Among the coolest features are: it can read the database structure either directly from the system catalogs, or parse a sql-file; and it can either talk directly to the server to create the structure, or write a sql-file; various dbms are supported.
(I wouldn’t try to design databases above 50 tables with it, though — but I wouldn’t try that with OmniGraffle, either
