Well, the battery on my Macbook died. I haven’t used my laptop for around 2 weeks. I charged it all night, but when I tried to boot it up today it didn’t respond. Plugging it back into AC power let me turn it on. The power status icon on the taskbar shows an empty battery with an ‘X’ in it. That basically means no battery has been detected. When I remove the AC power, the computer instantly shuts down. I guess I need to take it to an Apple store to get a replacement battery.

Mine did the same thing today, did you resolve your problem.
Did you get a new battery?

I didn’t have time to stop by the Apple store, so I just went to a local shop that sold Macbook batteries and replaced it. The new one did the trick. I’m pretty sure if I walked into the Apple store with my dead battery they would fix it or replace it for free.

Yep. This sounds familiar. Mine did the same thing yesterday, and I’m trying to find the number to call Apple to get a replacement battery.

Yea, same dang problem. I love Apple, but the issue is that they won’t do anything without applecare.

I took my Macbook in to the Apple Store yesterday and they gave me a new battery on the spot. Took about ten minutes. No charge. Thanks, Apple!

Same here. I’ll take it to the Apple Store. I noticed in my case that the battery stopped working after I let it die completely one night. I wonder if somehow, it discharged to the point of reversing polarity. I’ve heard that this is possible with all batteries…. Good to hear that I can likely get a free replacement.

Plenty of reports of this all starting up around the time the firmware updates for the MacBook came out late in 2006. Apple has never really addressed the real problem — they just give you a new battery. They are good about that… but there’s a real problem in the MacBooks that they’re not ‘fessing up to.

Hi people.
I’ll try to replace the battery tomorow.
Today I had the same problem with my MacBook 13″. I’ve tried all the stuff (resetting SMC, etc) and nothing

The battery on may 13 inch Macbook just died this weekend also. I do have Apple Care but a batter lasting less than 6 months sounds pathetic. A great computer otherwise.
Hopefully I can get it replaced tomorrow.

oh my gosh i hate this ! its the second time it happens to me
the first time my battery died it showed an x on the battery and oh well it died.
so then i went to mac store and bought a new one, however, it was black and my macbook is white, i dont think it maked a difference but oh well..
ive had my laptob for about 1 year and a half…
i hadnt used my laptob for a week now, and today i used it, and the battery says 0% charged, and it says that its charging, so after one hour of it being plugged in and me using it, my brother tripped over charger cable and it disconnected and my computer just turned off…
Posted by Omar on July 10, 2008 at 7:42 am
the weird part is that it says its charging and its really not

I had the same thing happen after not using the computer for 2 weeks while I was away. SO LAME! Think about all that electronic waste. I thought they were smarter than this!

same thing just happened to my macbook – i had just gotten a macbook pro and was getting the (1 month old) macbook ready to be sold, when i noticed that it wasn’t working unless it was plugged in. now i have to deal with getting a new battery, which would be easy if there was an apple store where i lived but i’m in europe so there’s no chance.
anybody here in europe? could i get a new battery by mail? i bought my macbook in the US, but i’m in europe permanently so going back just for a battery is not an option.

Yep, just happened to mine as well, i took it to a certified warranty repair shop that is essentially an apple store, but they said i couldn’t replace it even though i had the EXACT same battery issue as you guys. I left it unplugged for 2 weeks while on vacation, came back, plugged it in and it doesn’t friggin charge OR detect the battery. Lame-o-matic… I will call apple directly today and hopefully threaten them into giving me a new one

I bought my Macbook in Feb 2006 and the original battery lasted until January 2007, 11 months later. Apple changed it for a new one under the guarantee.
Yesterday morning I noticed that my battery was showing the X. This is 22 months after it was replaced, well out of warranty.
I phoned Apple and was talked through the usual procedures and then told what I already knew that the battery was dead and needed to be replaced and Apple would not provide me a replacement free but charge me £75.
I thought that I would have a try at getting one anyway and so with nothing to loose I asked the operator who had just told me I would have to pay for one, that I wanted to talk to a supervisor.
When I was put through to a supervisor I went on to him that I paid nearly £1000 for my Mac because PC’s are crap but at least PC’s batteries last longer. After him again telling me that I would have to pay I again went on about the cost and Apple knowing the battery fault. After 10 mins he said that I could have a free one and so now I have a new battery from Apple for my Macbook.
So if it happens to anyone of you again, keep trying and then ask to speak to a supervisor and go on about PC’s being cheaper and more reliable, its worth a try.
